Feds probe suspected drug tunnel between US-Mexico

On January 26, 2006 DEA and ICE agents uncovered a massive cross-border drug tunnel between the U.S. and Mexico. The cement lined passage linked warehouses in Tijuana, Mexico and Otay Mesa, California. The nearly 1,000 yard tunnel came complete with electricity, ventilation and over two tons of marijuana.

SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO (AP) - Federal officials in San Diego say they are investigating a suspected tunnel that may be used to smuggle drugs between Mexico and the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says in a statement that the suspected tunnel was found late Tuesday in the Otay Mesa area.

ICE says no further details could be released because of the sensitivity of the investigation, but officials hope they will have more information Wednesday morning.

Last year investigators discovered two long, sophisticated tunnels running some 2,000 feet from Mexico to San Diego.

Those tunnels, believed to be the work of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, were equipped with lighting, ventilation, and a rail system for drugs to be carried on a small cart.
