DAMASCUS, Syria, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Hezbollah is ready to attack Israel if the West interferes in President Bashar Assad's regime in Syria, a Lebanese Hezbollah spokesman said Sunday.
The unnamed spokesman said the Shiite group supports a compromise based on reforms and "easing the crisis" between the Assad government and internal anti-government forces, but believes a Middle East war could save the government, and warned it is prepared to attack Israel if Western powers attempt to intervene in domestic affairs, the Palestinian News Network reported.
Hezbollah has been one of the few forces in the Arab world supporting Assad's regime.
Two hundred people were killed last week in an overnight military assault on citizens in the Syrian city of Homs.
Israel has claimed Hezbollah and Iran are supplying arms to help Syria suppress its restive opposition activists.
"As time passes Iran and Hezbollah increase the efforts to help the Assad regime survive by providing knowledge, weaponry and other capabilities," Israeli head of military intelligence Aviv Kochavi told The Jerusalem Post in January.
