Thousands demonstrate against rising rents in Germany's Hamburg

Hamburg - Thousands took to the streets in the northern German city of Hamburg Saturday to protest at skyrocketing rents and a shortage of decent flats.

Police estimated that about 4,400 people participated in the march, with a significant number of participants from the city's leftist scene.

Protesters demanded rent ceilings significantly lower than current prices. Police reported some disturbances, including an incident in which people threw bottles full of paint at a local headquarters of Germany's opposition Social Democrat party. Some cars were also damaged.
