Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned U.S. officials that any plot or destructive action against Iran will be met with a strong response, MNA reported.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in an address to thousands of university professors and students at a gathering in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah on Sunday in reference to U.S. officials' claim that they recently thwarted a plot by two men linked to Iran's security agencies to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir.

The Leader said that Iran is investigating the hidden agenda behind the U.S. plot.

One of the possible purposes of the commotion that the United States recently made about Iran is to divert attention from the protests on Wall Street, he said, adding, "The people of about 80 countries have sympathized with this spreading movement, and that is very bitter for U.S. officials."

"They may be able to suppress this movement with the help of the police and the army, but it will not die out and will continue to exist like embers under ashes," he observed.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei said that U.S. and European officials are under the influence, adding, "When your people realize the real cause of your misery and problems, which is your humiliation before the Zionist regime, the flames of their rage will definitely engulf the capitalist system of the global arrogance (forces of imperialism) and will reduce it to ashes."

He added, "You have turned your back on your people and are hated by the majority of them, but the situation is the other way around in the Islamic Republic," and the people's high turnout for national events is a sign of "the nation's strong will and their opposition to any plot."

He went on to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran has withstood all the pressure imposed on it over the past 32 years.

"Our entire nation is present on the scene. We are all... soldiers of the system and Islam, and this united body will firmly stand against any evil plan or action and will not allow anyone to blackmail them," the Leader said.

He also stated that U.S. officials should be aware that they will receive a firm response from the Iranian nation if they take any wrong political or security measure against the Islamic Republic.

Iran could adopt parliamentary system one day

Ayatollah Khamenei also spoke about the country's political structure and said the fact that the late Imam Khomeini, the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, ordered the elimination of the post of prime minister helped realize the causes of the Islamic Revolution.

He added, "Under the country's current political system, the president is directly elected by the people, which is a good and effective method. However, if, perhaps in the distant future, it is felt that it would be better if officials of the administrative branch be chosen according to a parliamentary system, there will be no problem if changes are made to the current mechanism."
